Figures of Speech

    A figure of speech or rhetorical figure is a word or phrase that intentionally deviates from ordinary language use in order to produce a rhetorical effect. 


Figures of Speech may be classified as under: 

1. Those based on resemblance:

  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • Personification
  • Apostrophe


2. Those based on Contrast: 

  • Antithesis
  • Epigram
  • Oxymoron 
  • Paradox


 3. Those based on Association: 

  • Metonymy
  • Synecdoche

4. Those depending on construction: 

  • Climax
  • Anticlimax
